Ogham is an ancient language, or writing system, that dates to the 4th Century AD, although some say even earlier examples exist. It is read from bottom to top, and there are many examples of Ogham inscriptions on standing stones around Ireland and Scotland, with some also found in Wales and southern England.
It is thought that the system was developed to convey short messages, which may have been carved on wood, or to indicate ownership of objects. Standing stones carved with Ogham inscriptions may have been focal or meeting points in communities.
